History of Diamonds

Diamonds are the most valuable gemstones on the face of the earth for good reason. Born in the furnace of the earth's mantle under incredible pressure, millions and billions of years ago, they are a not just a pretty piece of compacted carbon but a rare and glittering artifact of the earth's violent history. They exploded from the subterranean depths in great thrusts of volcanic magma and traveled up through pipes to the surface where the lava hardened in the cool upper crust. As the face of the earth changed over time, diamonds became unearthed naturally through the process of erosion and soon found their way into the hands of people who recognized their inherent value.

Today, diamonds are extracted from the far-flung places on the planet like the sun-baked scrub of South Africa to the snow covered tundra of northern Canada. The average diamond mine has to process about 250 tons of ore to generate one regular carat, but in the case of rare colored diamonds, mountains literally have to be moved to find one. Although not every diamond is created equal, those with truly remarkable color and intensity are called "fancy" by the diamond industry and of all the diamonds circulating around the world today only a handful of the rare colored "fancy" variety exist. Yellow or brown diamonds are the most common, while those of other colors and greater intensity are considered the most valuable-making them peerless objects of beauty and prestige.
