Sotheby's has just reported that a rare, flawless blue diamond has just been sold for 7.98 million dollars USD, breaking a 20-year auction record. The 6.04 carat Fancy Vivid Blue Diamond Ring sold for 1.32 million dollars per carat, breaking the previous record held by the Hancock Red, which sold for 926,000 dollars per carat.
A London-based jeweler picked up the flawless blue as well as some other impressive pieces, such as the "Irving Berlin" emerald, a 47.60 carat necklace owned by the celebrated US composer and lyricist. The "Irving Berlin" sold for 2.64 million dollars.
